Summer or Winter Wedding? Choosing a Dress for the Season
Share
The season of your wedding affects everything from the light in your photographs to how comfortable you feel after a long day. Here is how to choose a dress that works with the weather, not against it.
Summer weddings
- Fabrics: chiffon, soft tulle and lightweight lace keep you cool.
- Shapes: A-line, sheath and fit and flare dresses are light and easy to move in.
- Details: open backs, fine straps and off-the-shoulder necklines are perfect in the heat.
- Tip: a detachable overskirt gives you drama for the ceremony and freedom for an outdoor party.
Winter weddings
- Fabrics: satin, heavier lace and structured layers feel luxurious and warm.
- Shapes: ball gowns and dramatic trains suit grand winter venues and candlelit churches.
- Details: long sleeves, high necks and capes are elegant and practical.
- Tip: beading and sequins look spectacular in candlelight and evening photographs.
Spring and autumn
The in-between seasons give you the most freedom. Sheer long sleeves are a lovely choice - covered enough for a cool church, light enough for a sunny afternoon. Layering with a detachable cape or cover-up gives you options on the day.
Destination weddings
Remember that the season at your venue may be very different from home. A winter wedding in Australia or Hawaii calls for a summer dress.
Plan around the season
Spring and summer are the busiest time for weddings and workshops, so if you are marrying between May and September, order at the earlier end of our five to six month recommendation.
Tell us your date and venue in your video consultation and we will suggest dresses to suit the season.
