Royal Wedding Dresses Are Most Popular Of The Decade
People all around the world marvelled at Meghan Markle’s wedding dress when she married Prince Harry in May 2018, and so much so that the Givenchy haute couture gown has just earned a major distinction.
The Duchess of Sussex’s bridal gown topped a list of the most popular wedding dresses of the past decade and was closely followed by sister-in-law and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s 2011 lace Alexander McQueen gown, according to fashion and lifestyle magazine Tatler.
The fashion magazine analysed data from FindMeAGift.co.uk, about celebrity bridal gown internet searches, and found that Meghan’s dress racked up 21,900 average monthly UK searches, just edging out Kate’s 21,500 hits per month.
The Royals led the pack by quite some margin, but joining them were Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) who wed Justin Bieber in a Virgil Abloh for Off-White off-the-shoulder gown in 2018 (5,800 monthly searches), and Arianna Grande, who wore multiple dresses, including a ‘90s-inspired Vera Wang in her surprise wedding to Dalton Gomez in May, with 2,400 monthly hits.
Both Givenchy designer Clare Waight Keller and Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton were taken aback by the interest in their respective dresses and brides at the time of the weddings.
“I had no idea it would be as big as it was. Only the night before, seeing all the photographers outside the abbey, did I think, ‘Oh, my God. This is massive,’” Burton said.
Despite being out of sight for years, however, both Meghan and Kate’s dresses are not out of mind.
