How to Care for Your Wedding Dress Before and After the Big Day
Share
Your wedding dress is one of the most special things you will ever own. A little care before and after the day will keep it looking beautiful for years to come.
When your dress arrives
- Unpack it straight away and hang it using the hanging loops, so the weight is supported.
- Try it on with your shoes and underwear, ideally with clean hands and no make-up or fake tan.
- Store it somewhere cool, dark and dry, away from direct sunlight, pets and small children.
- Use a breathable garment bag rather than plastic.
Removing creases
Hanging the dress for a few days will let most creases drop out. For anything stubborn, a professional steam is the safest option. Never iron beading, sequins or lace directly.
On the day
- Get dressed last, after hair and make-up.
- Keep a small emergency kit: safety pins, a stain pen suitable for delicate fabrics and white chalk.
- Ask your maid of honour to help with bustling or detachable pieces.
After the wedding
- Clean it promptly. Take your dress to a specialist bridal dry cleaner within a few weeks. Some stains, such as sugar from champagne, only become visible over time.
- Store it properly. Acid-free tissue and a breathable box or bag will protect it long term.
- Check it once a year. Refold along different lines to avoid permanent creases.
