A Guide to Wedding Dress Silhouettes - Aeternum Bridal

A Guide to Wedding Dress Silhouettes

The silhouette is the overall shape of your dress, and it is the best place to start your search. Here are the five classic shapes, what makes each one special and who they tend to suit.

A-line

Fitted through the bodice and flowing gently out from the waist to the hem, like the letter A. It is the most universally flattering shape, easy to move and dance in, and works for every setting from a country church to a beach. See our A-line dresses.

Ball gown

A fitted bodice with a full, dramatic skirt - the fairytale choice. Ball gowns make a grand entrance and suit formal venues, long aisles and brides who want a true statement. Layers of tulle keep the skirt light despite its volume. See our ball gowns.

Fit and flare

Fitted through the bodice and hips, flaring out from around mid-thigh. It shows off your shape with a softer flare than a mermaid, so it is easier to walk and dance in. See our fit and flare dresses.

Fishtail or mermaid

Fitted all the way to the knee before flaring dramatically to the floor. It is the most glamorous and body-skimming of the silhouettes, and looks spectacular with a long train. Because it is so fitted, an accurate made-to-measure fit makes all the difference. See our fishtail and mermaid dresses.

Sheath or column

A slim shape that follows the body in a straight line from neckline to hem. Sheath dresses are elegant, modern and understated, and are perfect for city weddings, warm destinations and second outfits for the evening. See our sheath and column dresses.

How to choose

  • Think about your venue: grand spaces suit volume, relaxed settings suit lighter shapes.
  • Think about comfort: will you be dancing all night?
  • Think about how you want to feel: classic, romantic, glamorous or modern.

Many brides are surprised by the shape they fall in love with. If you are torn between two, we can talk you through both on a video call.
